$5 Million RICO Laws
Three trucking companies have initiated a $5 million lawsuit under racketeering charges against a towing company in Memphis, Tennessee. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, accuses A1’s Towing and S-Line Parking, along with several related businesses, of engaging in predatory practices targeting commercial truck drivers, in violation of the federal anti-racketeering act, RICO.
The defendants, including Colton Ahmad Cathey who owns A1’s Towing & Hauling, are accused of operating under multiple assumed names and orchestrating a scheme to lure and trap truck drivers, using unlawful force, intimidation, and harassment to extort excessive payments for the release of their vehicles.
The lawsuit details how S-Line collaborated with third-party businesses to provide security and parking services, exploiting truck drivers by falsely advertising open parking spaces and then towing their vehicles when they temporarily parked to make purchases. Employees of the defendants allegedly resorted to intimidation, threats, and even assault to coerce truck drivers into paying inflated fees or surrendering their vehicles.
Following numerous complaints and a suspension of A1’s towing permit by the Memphis Transportation Commission, the trucking companies pursued legal action to address the ongoing issues.
