3,714 Drivers and 12,456 CMVs Removed by Inspectors during Road check

This year during the three day International Roadcheck event, more than 59,000 inspections were conducted. The event was held by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance from May 17-19. During this period, certified CVSA inspectors located in both the United States and Canada, conducted numerous inspections. (There were a total of 36,555 Level I inspections) In Mexico, inspectors did an additional 1,1150 Level V inspections. As a result 8,718 vehicles ended up being placed out of service. This equates to roughly a 23.1% vehichle out-of-service rate for all of North America. Only 3,118 drivers were placed out of service equating to roughly a 6.4% driver out of service rate.

Every year when the CVSA conducts its inspections, the aim is to highlight one specific aspect of the roadside inspection. The focus of this year was on wheel ends. Out of the top 10 vehicle out of service violations, wheels were ranked seventh and tires were ranked second.

Last year’s Roadcheck event, which took place Sept. 9-11 after being postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, resulted in an overall vehicle out-of-service rate of 20.9% in North America, an increase from the 17.9% rate the prior year.

International Roadcheck is a CVSA program with participation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation and the National Guard.
